Teaching
"Angus is an incredible composition teacher. Whilst doing my degree in Choreography Angus came and, in a relatively short space of time, blew our minds about what performance is, how to shape it and to read it. He contributed a huge amount to expanding our collective view of choreography.
His pedagogy was very alive and in the moment, much of it driven by very immediate questions that Angus was chewing on and which, infectiously, spread through our group. All this was underpinned by a deep, experiential understanding of the craft of choreography which was clearly developed over many years of practice and rumination.
It was way too much, I was in bed for two weeks afterwards - my nervous was shattered, but changed forever.
Now when I have been invited to teach composition, I, honest to God, feel like I'm "channelling" Angus. I know he's still alive, so I can't be channelling his dis-embodied spirit or anything like that, but maybe in those moments he's having a nap or something and I can download it all from him.
Angus has been a major influence in my formation as performer, choreographer and movement artist."
Sebastian Bechinger. (Graduate from Dartington College choreography degree course..)
I began professionally teaching and running workshops in "multi-arts" when I was 19 (after having lived and worked with the sculpture David Gilbert on the Isle of Man for a couple of years before that and helped him when he ran workshops.) Then, after a year training in dance and theatre, I ran the 'Mad House" for nearly 2 years in Sussex, a workshop space for disturbed and difficult kids to come and play and make, instead of school. After moving to Provence aged 20 I helped run workshops in various "making" skills, and got involved in street and physical theatre workshops and festivals.
I then went to China and trained full-time in Tai Chi, and on returning to Europe saw folk doing Contact Impro for the first time, and this drew me back to dance and I ended up at Dartington College of Arts, where the work and teaching of Mary O'Donnell Fulkerson was the first (Anatomical)Release-based training in the UK, with visiting artists like Steve Paxton coming for extended periods to work with the students.
In the 3rd year of my degree there I began teaching various classes and workshops, and also ran a weekly workshop for 2 years with a group of people with schizophrenia
Over the last 35+ years, after graduating with a degree in dance and theatre, I've taught choreography, directing, composition, improvisation, anatomical release and contact improvisation at universities and centres, and through workshops, across the world.
I guess I ended up specialising in exploring choreographic methods and systems, and in explororing what creates compositional and perceptual engagement.
By using models for the body, it's movement and articulation, the spatial conditions bodies generate, compositional and choreographic forms, and relationships with audience, I found reasonably clear systems to engage with students, especially in their initial choreographic training, and in supporting their work as they developed.
I was a regular guest artist at the EDDC (The European Dance Development Centre) in Arnhem for many years, and an associate lecturer at the Scottish School Of Contemporary Dance for about 18 years or so. I taught on the staff at the Dancemakers dept of artEZ Arnhem for 5 years, and also at Dance Academy of Arnhem. I was visiting professor of choreography at the Korean National University For The Arts in Seoul, S Korea, and still am at LEM Buenos Aires. I've also taught at Mimar Sinam University Istanbul, Bulgi University Istanbul, Bratislava Conservatoire, The School of Fine Art Caracas, Tanzhaus Dusseldorf, Cientro en Movimento Lisbon. Dancers Group San Francisco. LEM Buenos Aires, Outfall Festival USA. Dance House Glasgow. Dance Base Edinburgh. Merseyside Dance Initiative, The London Contact Group, Davis University USA, Studio 303 Montreal, and many many more....
